Historical Underground
in Plzen
The Plzen Historical Underground is one of the largest underground
labyrinths in Europe. It arose during the town foundation in the 13th
century. Tunnels, vaults and galleries with a length over 20 km were
gradually hollowed in a sandstone subsoil in several levels. They
were used for storing food and as an escape way from the town. At
present, a tour with a length of 1 km is open to the public. |
